CBI Challenges Sengar’s Bail in Unnao Rape Case in Supreme Court

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has approached the Supreme Court with a special leave petition, challenging the Delhi High Court’s recent decision to grant conditional bail to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case.

On December 23, the High Court suspended Sengar’s sentence pending appeal and released him on bail with certain conditions. However, Sengar will remain incarcerated due to a separate CBI case, in which he was convicted and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for murder.

In December 2019, Sengar was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment with a ₹25 lakh fine. He appealed the conviction in January 2020 and sought suspension of his sentence in March 2022, a request strongly opposed by the CBI and the victim’s lawyers.
